Real Life Game of Thrones
Standing at the airfield I was enjoying the impromptu picnic on the land cruiser tailgate. An Omani officer was telling me to shake my little paper coffee cup when I didn’t want more of the strong coffee seemingly only slightly hotter than the weather being poured out of a faded plastic Arabian carafe. Another officer handed me a date from the interior of Oman telling me to eat it with an almond. The dates from his farm were better, but unfortunately the season was over here.
I asked why they shook the coffee cups to indicate they were finished. In old times, they explained, no one could be trusted. The best way to ensure state secrets were not overheard was to make sure servants could not hear at all. Sultans and Sheiks shook their coffee cups so deaf servants knew they were finished. Hundreds of years later, here we were, still shaking coffee cups in the desert heat.
As I sipped the strong coffee, these men described how they were slowly building fortunes in their country. They were running the same playbook I was, high pay from security work put into other investments over time, but their playbook was better because they are avoiding banks and not paying interest.
