It was late. My friend would be getting on a plane and heading home tomorrow. Thucydides lived 2,500 years ago and was forged by war and exile. When the long and grinding Peloponnesian War broke out between Athens and Sparta in the 5th century BC, he joined the war not as a commentator, but as a commander. He fought for Athens not just out of duty, but from a deep belief in its power and potential.
